China, The international alliance against Japan

The United States had broken the Japanese diplomatic code, and by July 1941 it knew that Japan hoped to end the undeclared war in China and was preparing for a southward advance toward British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, planning first to occupy southern Indochina and Thailand even at the risk of war with Britain and the United States.
